How to trim livestock hooves?
Step 1- Trim the inner claw of a foot
Firstly, trim the hoof by cutting perpendicular to the sole. The appropriate toe length is 3 ¼ inches for livestock of an appropriate size. NEVER trim a claw shorter than this. Properly trimmed soles create flat, even, weight-bearing surface from toe to heel. Repeat this step on the outer claw of the same foot.
Step 2- Modeling the soles
Next, model the soles of your livestock. Proper modeling relieves pressure on areas of the hoof where sole ulcers are prevalent, and effectively prevents manure buildup between your livestock’s claws.
Step 3- Identify and therapeutically trim any lesions
Watch out for any hemorrhages or abscesses in the sole or white line. A hoof tester can be used to identify painful areas in the claw. Furthermore, always keep in mind to evaluate the skin between the toes or on the heels for evidence of infectious lesions on the claws.
Step 4- Trim any loose horn
Last of all, trim any loose horn in the heel area, trim down any visible ridges and remove all the necrotic tissue.
